Hi Rick,
If this were my pen, I would make sure all organic debri like straw, shavings, droppings and so on are completely removed as they absorb the chlorine and reduce its effectiveness. Additionally, I would remove the top 2 inches of the soil in the pen just to be safe if Blackhead, gapeworm and other diseases/parasites were an issue.
Note that we do have 4 turkeys & have had a few dozen in the last 5 years with no problem. Our chickens do get in the turkey pen and eat the turkey food. The chickens always look much better than the turkeys.
We will be deworming the turkeys this weekend as they seem underweight. Next week we plan to seperate the toms as they always fight. Maybe it is natural, but it is bad for my nerves.
This summer we plan on building a real turkey pen that will exclude the chickens. Perhaps we will solarize the soil by placing clear plastic down after soaking the ground with water & molasses. Of course the plastic has to be "sealed" to the ground to keep in the heat & moisture to kill germs, worms & the like.
Blackhead has not been an issue yet.
