Re: [CHICKENS-101] Mash for the babies

Wendy, That is a great idea because it will help your chicks gain immunity to outside germs and bacteria in the soil.  I wait until mine are 3 to 4 weeks old.  Since you have them eating so well, I'd continue as you are. You are a great chicken mom with a good sense of what they need. Cathryn

Hi all- I just got the 16 chicks and one duckling that I ordered from Purely Poultry- everyone is doing great. But the invoice said it was Ideal Hatchery that sent them to me! Must have been subcontracted. Anyway, I wanted to be sure the little duck could enjoy a good first meal, so I put about 3 tablespoons of chick Flock Starter in a small bowl and added 2 tablespoons water, to soften the crumbles for her. It quickly turned into a mash and yes, she ate it very well but she had to push her way into the crowd because all the chicks loved it too! I'm making two bowlfuls of it a day, they finish every morsel within an hour or two so it doesn't have time to go sour. Between times, they eat the chick crumbles. Next week, when they are over a week old, I plan to dig up a healthy weed and leave some dirt on the roots and put it in the box with them. I'm thinking they will love peeking at that!
