Re: [CHICKENS-101] disease

If the birds can't survive showing they are not strong and shouldn't be kept.  I'd vaccinate for ILT and fowlpox.  Fowlpox is spread by migratory birds being bitten by mosquitoes and spreading it to other birds. Infectious larengotracheitus can be spread from wild birds but is spread at shows by people who vaccinate and do not wait 21 days for their birds to develop immunity, they show right away. ILT is a nasty disease.  Mycoplasmas can be spread at shows too which is why my birds food and water dishes are where another bird cannot get their head into the cage and get into my bird's food and water.  Never, ever show your best unless you can afford to loose them to disease or theft. I've had silkies stolen until I started micro chipping. I take my wand to shows with me and get it out when the people I know who steal are there. I am very disillusion by the many of the people who show.  Their nasty rumors and name calling, stealing eggs, and touching birds who then get sick with mareks, et...The creeps put vaccine on their fingers and touch your birds when you won't sell them.  I had a teen at a show last May do that and the pullet had to be put down.  I turned him in for touching my silkie, but nothing happened. Another breeder who everyone claims is such a good person and christian never paid for her gray silkies and she has done everything she can to disparage my name and she is the one who never paid!!  There are good people there, but it seems the bad apples are increasing. Or you have strong breeds! Some of us show and are exposed to a lot of yuck! Some of us have rare breeds that their immunity is weaker. I have been discussing this with my partner in crime a lot lately. Do you take your best to a show? Or take stock and try and sell it at the show and not bring them home? Or just wade through it and if they get sick, they weren't strong enough to re breed anyway??

I had a pen get sick. I lost a maran. 2 of my ameraucanas and another maran had to go through the symptoms. Sex links and RIRs never missed a beat. Stronger birds!
