I started off giving eggs away for free too and then people started offering donations, so I then began taking donations. Usually people give $3.00, but I'd take $2.00. Once it became known that we were accepting money for the eggs people who were getting them for free stopped asking for them and I stopped giving. I thought I shouldn't give eggs away free to some people while others were paying. Thus my "customer base" dropped. I think there are some other factors at play too. For some reason, probably due to propaganda about food safety, people think the eggs they get in the store are "safer" and they are taking a risk by eating eggs from yard chickens. It doesn't matter how much you tell them or information you provide some people have their minds set. Many people are not used to the variations that yard eggs produce in shell and also the occasional blood spot in the yolk. Also, I know many people don't like to eat eggs that have been fertilized and we have a rooster that fertilizes.
