Pasty bottoms can be avoided by feeding fresh chick feed, clean water, and using a thermometer so their brooder is not too hot or too cold. If they get a touch a bit of instant oatmeal, no sugar, works wonders in helping clear it up. I use instant because it is small enough for them to eat.  Just make sure you give them a small sprinkle of grit over their food if you feed oatmeal. Cathryn


I have not heard this, but you do have to watch for "pasty butt" because some fecal metter can stick to the skin and harden and plug them up.  They will die if they can't poop!  Susan
