Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Extra light

In the definition below, naked neck chickens are hybrids because they are two different varieties of the same species-chickens- that are bred then culled and rebred for specific traits et.. Silkie chickens were bred to turkens, then bred back and forth for silkie characteristics/traits.
Side note:(Many still have a long ways to go. There were too many long necked, long legged, no type, sparse foot feathering, turtle backed, tiny headed with no crest, reddish skin naked necks at the last show I attended. Ugly chickens whose only traits they shared with silkies was that they had down on their body and some black skin.)
hybrid  (hbrd)
An organism that is the offspring of two parents that differ in one or more inheritable characteristics, especially the offspring of two different varieties of the same species or the offspring of two parents belonging to different species. In agriculture and animal husbandry, hybrids of different varieties and species are bred in order to combine the favorable characteristics of the parents. Hybrids often display hybrid vigor. The mule, which is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, is an example of a hybrid. It is strong for its size and has better endurance and a longer useful lifespan than its parents. However, mules are sterile, as are many animals that are hybrids between two species.

Just to split hairs re terminology:

A hybrid is a mix of two different =species= such as a horse and a
donkey creating a mule, or a lion and a tiger creating a tiglon.
A crossbreed, mongrel or mutt is a mix of two or more breeds within the
same species: Schnauzer X Poodle = Schnoodle. Rhode Island Red X
Delaware = Gold Star

Hybrids are often sterile. Crossbreeds, mongrel and mutts are not. Some
scientists have been forced to re-think their identification of some
species when it was discovered that fertile offspring were possible with
another species thought entirely unrelated. Witness: grey wolves, red
wolves and coyotes are all members of the same species as our domestic
dogs. They are rated as subspecies: Canis lupus lupus, Canis lupus
rufus, Canis lupus latrans, and, finally, Canis lupus familiaris. The
change was necessary because they are all interfertile, and therefore,
by definition, they could not be different species.
