I subbed while taking classes, mostly long term sub jobs where the school hired a sub on the days I had classes all day. The daily jobs were more like combat pay in some districts because I was given the students that the other subs and the teachers could not control. I worked hard but subbing is nothing like the day to day responsibilities and rewards that come with teaching. The main advantage with subbing is no paperwork, today's paperwork that has to be done after papers are graded is staggering.
Speaking of teaching, I had better get moving. I would like to be to school by 6:30-6:45am today. Teacher report time is 7:10am, we have students in the hall at 7:15, and class starts at 7:25am.

In some ways I love subbing--it's like catch-riding a horse that you've got to connect with in minutes, before you perform. And not nearly the amount of useless paperwork as for the full-time classroom!
I think I told Cathryn this one... The first time I subbed at the local high school, the first kid hit the door, let out a howl of delight ("We got a sub, gonna be a great day!"), and took off down the hall to spread the word. Second kid hit the door, also in high glee... only, his grin slipped off his face and shattered on the floor--obvious thought in his mind was "Oh sh!t--we're not going to get away with *anything*--I had her in first grade!"
There was also the day a kid in the computer lab tried to confront me physically when I caught him on sites he shouldn't have been on. I dealt with the situation, then (as rules required) called the office to let them know I'd been confronted. The secretary asked (as I suppose she was required to) if I was frightened. Well... It flashed through my head that here I regularly dealt with 1200 pounds of high-strung horse, and I should be frightened of some wet-behind-the-ears sugar-fed teen I could take down like *that*?
I answered, "No."
Did I mention that I also ran a 4-H Livestock camp for 15 years?? <g>
