RE: [CHICKENS-101] LGD's and RGD's - OT color genetics in LGDs

> Our SDSLivestock Pyrebashs are true to the nature of their parents with
strong independent learning and decision making skills, superior
intelligence, and boding ability. We believe them to be the most excellent
for all types of small to extremely large ranch protection work. Whether it
is for living in the pasture with the Livestock or in and out of the house
around the pens and barns!

for starters it sounds like you are very new to LGDs and you are not
familiar with the color genetics as you write in your blog that many of the
pups are a fawn color and you believe they will turn white. You have
crossed two breeds that are not genetically white dogs, the Akbash is a
pale brown dog and if you had bred him to another Akbash you would have had
a litter of white looking pups. The Pyr most likely does not carry the gene
that makes the Akbash as pale as he is and with the Pyr being genetically a
colored dog with a big white spot "covering" most of the color, it is not
surprising that your puppies are not white.

wether or not your mixed breed puppies will be "true to the nature of their
parents" only time will tell and being that they are mixed breed and there
is no way knowing how those genes will mix. There is also no guarantee that
the parent dogs are actually purebred if they did not come with papers and
DNA testing, just because they look purebred doesn't mean that they are.

And by the way I was shocked to read on your blog that you did not feed
your momma dog for 2 days after she had given birth, so hunger would force
her out of the den she has dug. It's not okay to risk compromising the
well-being of her and her litter because you didn't plan ahead and made
sure she had the litter in a place that was accessible.

I hope you are giving this momma dog all the food she wants to eat now and
that you are prepared to worm both momma and puppies for roundworms
starting at 2 weeks of age every 2 weeks until they are 8 weeks old with an
appropriate wormer such as Nemex.
