This is why mine are penned up. Yes, they are destructive. Also, even though we have acres and acres of free land behind our house, our chickens would cross the road and get into neighbors' gardens. One night one of mine got out when I opened their door. I forgot about her and the next morning she had jumped into one of the raised beds and shuffled everything around. Chickens dig, pull off leaves and other things. I pull weeds and toss them into their pen. This keeps them happy.

Hello all
So, I started letting the girls out during the day, our dog sits out with them and keeps an eye on them :)
Well, that all got restricted back to the pen as they totally destroyed Mama's garden.
In my garden where I grow hops, beans, peas, tomatoes and artichokes, no problem, they scratched and ate and whatever, but in Mama's garden, they tore up everything, ripped strawberry plants out of the ground, completely uproot all of her flowers, just made a total mess.
