Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: coyotes

Well that bites that the DNR wont help. Here they will if they are killing animals and they have the time. Trapping isnt easy! easier to bait and shoot them and that can be difficult. I think a nuesense (spelt wrong I am sure pronounced new-sense) would be the best bet. Some states allow hunters to kill unwanted dangerous animals out of season. Coyotes in many states do not have a season. So can be killed at any time. but they can take care of bobcats, bear, coyotes and mountian lions. Sometimes they trap other times they bait and kill. Sometimes they charge but sometimes they dont because they can sell the hides to make money. I know around here they dont charge. You can check with DNR and the sheriff but if you see the coyote on the property and you preseve it is threatening your animals or people you should have the right to shoot it out of defense of your home without a liscence. I know here thats the way it works.
A few years ago we lived out in the middle of nowhere even more then now. nearest neighbor was over 5 miles away. One night like at 3am we heard some noises so I went out to check. I didnt see anything but we heard what sounded like several people walking around threw the brush. There was a known illegal crossing trail running threw the peoperty. We called border patrol and 2 cars showed up. One fo the guys we knew and they went out walking the fence line. Looked like a cartoon. pitch black no moon. All you could see what the flash light dot sweeping back and forth. Then about 3/4th the way around the fence it stoped. Slowly went back and forth to this one area. Stoped again then bounced up and down as the agent ran back to the gate. I asked what was wrong he giggled and said well they where US citizans! mountian lion citizans but legal citizans! lol They where sneaking up to our goat pen. I asked why he didnt shoot it. He said he didnt want to file
the 35 page report for discharging his weapon. I cant say I blamed him. I got my shot gun and popped off a few shots and scared them off. Then border patrol left.
Best of luck and hope it gets taken care of soon.

Dear Jeannette,

Oh, I'm sorry I didn't write you back.  I've had lots of visitors and happenings the last few days and lost track of all my good coyote emails.  So anyway, YES, I did call the DNR and they would not do a trap for me, but said I could do one myself.  They said I could get a booklet on how to do it at a place that sells hunting licenses.

So I was asking someone who is in the know at a local feed store and they said that set up a coyote trap is a lost art.  Most people cannot successfully trap one on their own without a bit of folklore passed down from generation to generation.  BUT he did know an older man who still had that art, and gave me his name and so I will set about calling him today.  He is a retired DNR worker and maybe he would be willing to come and show us how to set one up.

And so I'll set about calling him today. Thanks for the reminder.  And if that doesn't work I'll look around or call around about a niesense hunter (is that someone who will come and hunt a coyote for me?)

Meanwhile, every barn door and chicken coop door is locked tight every night here!  Not taking any chances!

Thanks again for all your help!

Truly,

Britta
