Don't blame you a bit, I think I'd cry too! Fence around the garden, that's on my to-do list also, before mine are old enough to go out.
A few years ago I had to be away for several days near the end of April and first of May. I'd put in my tomatoes, and left DH with strict instructions to put the "caps" on them if there was any chance of a frost. Well... He didn't. He did say it got down to 30--but he didn't think there would be frost in May. This from a Mensan. (I suppose the excuse is, he's from Memphis, where there's never frost in May!)
Hope your garden center has veggie seedlings still!
