I use raised beds--mostly 4' square--then I have a lightweight frame with a chickenwire "bubble" that can be set right on top. Doesn't work for the things that grow tall, but for smaller things (carrots, salad greens, onions, etc.) it's perfect. Keeps the cat out, and (so far) no rabbit or other pest problems. So maybe I can get by without a fence... although there are the peas, beans, and melons that will be on trellises. Maybe I can use rocks around them--I already do that around the tomatoes, anyway (perfect mulch, plus they soak up the heat and radiate it back overnight!) Will have to keep the chickens from pecking the tomatoes and eating berries, though... >sigh<
