George, Hi! Missed you!  My elderly Great Aunt and Uncle had feeders.  They put clabbered milk and feed in them for the chickens.  This was an old timey, southern farm in the 50's.  I like the round tank feeders with the 3/4 -1 inch lip for the birds to eat out of.  I do not put more than a few inches in at a time to make sure the feed is fresh.  The smaller lip helps keep feet out of the feeder.  I do have to put a cover on them or I will find broodys sitting on eggs in them.  Must be the take out of version of food for chickens, "nest and peck". I can't hang them or the silkies would never get a bite because their crests can get in the way.  Cathryn



 

I guess the idea of a feeder is either to keep the feed clean or prevent waste. Most feeders do neither very well. In the old days the chicken feed was just scattered on the ground.
