RE: [CHICKENS-101] Still Getting Started :)

Our first coop was similar to what you're describing and it wasn't
that cheap (dollar-wise)
It lasted about a year out in the elements. When my husband made
another coop, we cannibalized parts from it and ideas. The only thing good
about it was the shingled roof. It didn't leak, but too bad the rest of it
fell apart.

If you can make one yourself, that is the best way to go. We did
have one made for us by a friend's husband........I made the mistake of not
getting a price before he started the work. I kept asking how much and she
kept telling me he had to add up the receipts, etc. Then one day, it
appeared in our yard. We weren't home when he delivered it. It was on
skids, so my dh moved it to the chickenyard and we got it level and all set
up.......asked how much and whew!!! $2000.00! It is nice.....built very
well and it will definitely last, but I am sure we could have built it for
much less. It is 8x8 with a man door and a chicken door, 8 nest boxes,
accessible from the outside, and several perches. Metal roof and T1-11
siding. It looks like the ones advertised by the Amish but it is bigger.

Our chickens free range year round, so they only need the coop for
nighty night time and very inclement weather........but even then they come
out. We have built a couple of lean-to shelters for them to get out of the
rain and hot sun. They really love their three sided "fly-in". (like a
horse run-in but much smaller 4' x 8' with two perches and a metal roof.

Good luck. I hope you enjoy building it with your S.O.......my dh
and I barely escaped with our lives......and marriage! He doesn't take
direction well......lol!

Hi Georgia,
Hmm, these coops seem to be from Pawhut. They look sturdy, even in the zoom
version but in reality the wood is thin and the case of the specific coops I
received, both split and bowed. Even if I were able to put them together,
I'd be worried that they'd fall apart in the first real rain we had.
