Re: [CHICKENS-101] Adding a new chicken

I think letting them see one another without being able to bother one another might be helpful. I tried putting him in once it was dark last night but he was getting pecked this morning so my daughter rescued him.  She may have rescued him too soon because they haven't hurt him at all.

Thanks for the good suggestions, we'll keep trying!

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Adding a new chicken

We always add new birds at night when it is totally dark and place the
new birds on the roost beside the older birds. There is minimal pecking
order the next few days with this method. I've done this three separate
times and it has worked for our flock. When we raise chicks like we have
now, they are kept separate from the flock inside the coop but they can
see each other for months before the big day arrives. When I have gotten
older birds I just put them in as I said..at night...
With chickens there is always going to be some pecking order..but I've
not had anything that was a bloody pecking order so far.
