Sheryl, I use pine bedding. This winter I want to put bales of straw thru the chipper and use part wheat straw too. I've never used the pelleted bedding. Is it possible to get a load of coarse sand and raise their yard?
I had better run out and shut the doors my birds go in and out of. The weather changed to a low of 48 tonight. My chicks are going to get chilled if I do not shut a few doors and block direct drafts.
We've talked about adding sand. I did some research today at Backyard Chickens and found several threads about the pelleted bedding. Everyone who uses it loves it. We got some more today.
We're making plans for their permanent coop so I'd rather spend sand money on the permanent home which will have 3 separate runs that we can rotate weekly. We're going to seed with grass as soon as we rotate them to a different run. Each run will be larger than the one they have now so hopefully they won't be able to macerate the ground as much. DH has some of the fence posts up but he got sidetracked with building a lean-to off one side of the barn. There's always something to get in the way of progress. :-)
