RE: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Broody hen help

>I have been watching closely to monitor any eating/drinking pooping, and
she did none of the above for 3 days. so i lifted her off the nest to find
that she had pooped on the nest, but had missed all the eggs. No way she
can go 17 more days without food or water, and i havent a clue how to make
her eat or drink. should i be taking her off the nest as one article
suggested, or should i trust her instincts also her comb is somewhat pale.
any suggestions. thanks.

I have not let a hen actually hatch out some eggs, but I take the broodies
out of the nest several times a day and place them outside in a safe spot
so the other hens won't attack them until they snap out of their trance and
go and run around a bit, eat and drink and poop. They usually stay out for
10 minutes or so then run back to their nest. I have found they will eat
and drink if I put it within reach so they don't have to get up. I honestly
don't know if they would go for too long without food and water to harm
themselves, but I had one that I just couldn't break from her broodiness
because do to the weather I had to leave that chicken house. Once the
weather got better I simply closed it so she couldn't get inside anymore,
after about 4 days she stopped, but she had lost quite a bit of weight even
with me taking her off the nest regularly and even bringing her inside my
house for the nights so I could make sure she got plenty to eat and drink.
