Thanks Jane.
We're a family of 4 (2 of the members being young) and I was telling my
husband last night that I think (think cause I'm unsure ) that 5 laying hens
would be enough for us. We do consume quite a bit of eggs due to not
purchasing much meat (we buy local, grass-fed which costs more so we go with
less). I have some chicks under the heat lamp right now. They're a week
old today or tomorrow and an Australian Shepherd mix that likes to lay next
to them. He'll occasionally sit up, stick his head over and check on them
and then lay back down. I know I need to be cautious with the birds and dog
and I am. He's confined to our room at night and not left alone with the
birds. Well, I go about my daily business and he'll lay by them but I don't
leave the house and leave him in the house with them. I really think he's
taken on the "guardian" role with them. I was joking with my husband last
night and told him that I'd read that chicks get their "big" person
imprinted as their Mom because it's the first person they really see and in
our case I envision Max as the mom. Ding dong dog.
