Re: [CHICKENS-101] Price chicken

Welcome to the group.  There are lots of people on the board who know lots about chickens.  I am not one of them. We live near Atlanta, Ga and have had a variety of chickens for about a year.  Really enjoy them.  RIRs sell for about $3.50 and up for a week old chick and about $10-15 and up for a laying hen ikn my area.  I have bought chicks and hens from Craigs List and from the local feed stores and from a poultry group I joined here in No. Georgia.  Good luck with your chickens.  Susan in Conyers

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Price chicken

We are new to chickens this year and don't want to be taken advantage of when we go to buy some. How much do laying hens usually go for. We are looking to get Rhode Island Reds. That's what my dad use to buy when I was a kid. I am sure I will have plenty of questions as we go. But if we could get some pointers from you all with the expertise which we are lacking it would be greatly appreciated. My husband built a coop and nesting boxes. It is pretty waterproof but it does have a couple of very small leaks. Will that be a problem? We want to get about a dozen hens and 1 rooster. My dad always said the hens laid more eggs with a rooster. Just if we could pick your brains and we could get as much advice as possible.
