Re: [CHICKENS-101] Price chicken

Welcome ..... the price of hens varies from place to place and what
the market will allow. Check to see if there are any auctions in your
area or check with local 4-H groups ...sometimes kids will sell excess
stock. I have paid from 5 -15 for young hens just starting to lay ...
but I also have Amish to buy from. As far as leaks go... depends on
where they are... over perches or nest boxes is bad... over
feed...bad... by the door OK. Roosters are a personal choice... like
you said they make hens feel more at ease when out free range so the are
more likely to lay more then hens who are constantly in fear from
predators.

That's what my dad use to buy when I was a kid. I am sure I will have plenty of questions as we go. But if we could get some pointers from you all with the expertise which we are lacking it would be greatly appreciated. My husband built a coop and nesting boxes. It is pretty waterproof but it does have a couple of very small leaks. Will that be a problem? We want to get about a dozen hens and 1 rooster. My dad always said the hens laid more eggs with a rooster. Just if we could pick your brains and we could get as much advice as possible.
