Re: [CHICKENS-101] Western PA

It seems these limits are meant to discourage "production with intent to distribute" but allow just enough to provide  for consumption only. Of course, if one has a large family, so few chickens may not even provide enough. This must be maddening.

Then My hb got a job transfer to Western Pa, I did my homework and called every township zoning commissioner before we decided on a house to make sure we'd be allowed chickens at our new home. We decided on a house with .7 acres. weird thing is when the zoning commissioner in our new township read the zoning ordinance to me ( 3 chickens per acre) he then actually said I'm allowed 1 1/2 chickens! He is also the chief of police! So, How do I do that!?!??

Hi Debra

Typically 1 ½ chickens means 3 bantams or 1 rooster and a hen.  Towns in Western PA are far different than Eastern PA and have a lot higher restrictions.

Not much you can do but just accept that.  I would recommend checking with the town council as well as the chief of police takes orders from them and not the other way round.

Best of luck

Elizabeth
