Thanks, Liz. Every now and then we will have an animal(s) that doesn't fit in for some reason, and needs to find another home. We feel so responsible for them, and since I'm active in horse rescue, I know how dreadful people can be. So it's VERY hard trying to find anybody we think will be good to them for the rest of their lives. I feel like the least I can do is train them and make them the best they can be and maybe they will be able to avoid abuse brought on by their own bad behavior. I have lots of people wanting to take Ben and Jerry, but I know they wouldn't be able to care for them. Mainly I'm trying to avoid the Mexicans that will use a gentle rooster as bait for their fighting cocks. But I really do need to place these kids. I have 4 very old hens who don't appreciate their "affection".
I learned something awful last year about roosters. We had 3 cockerels all the same age, all OEG banties, we needed to place, so we put them in a pen by themselves. They were a feisty lot, and 2 of the boys ganged up on the smaller one and literally gang-raped him. We were so horrified....I never knew they would do something like this. Naturally we separated out the victim right away, but he never did come around and become a pet. Luckily, he was a beauty and someone took him, but he was always wild.
But I'm like you...I'm trying not to get attached to Ben and Jerry...it's really too late for that! I'm resolved to just enjoying them as much as I can until their "real" mom come and gets them!

Ben &Jerry are a a couple of good looking guys. Pretty cute how you can get them to pose. The " chicken salad" is quite amusing.
I can surely empathize with you about the need to part with male birds. I have 3 cockerels from my Mother's Day hatch. They are living in separate quarters from the layers and their Roo, but will not be warm enough for winter. I have been trying to not like them but they are so handsome and amusing.
