Re: [CHICKENS-101] housing issue

Doug, If your pens are built as such that small opossums, coons, et... can't get thru the fencing, I'd leave my in and out door open.  I do. As a just in case, I  set live traps by my barns.  (I always have 8-11 set at all times between my my 7 coops/barns.)  One can never guess what will come along strong enough to do damage.  I had two boar opossums tear the fencing on the roof of one of my pens many years ago.  The roof is woven horse fencing and the old fashioned strong poultry fencing. We added another layer of horse fencing.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] housing issue

Greetings all you chicken experts, I have a question.
I have a rather large coop (About 8' by 4') with a large roost area and 6 nest boxes built into the walls. Outside of that I have a pen area that is about 10' by 18' that is fenced in all around including the top. My perimeter fencing goes down and then horizontal inward for at least 12" and in the more vulnerable areas, it also goes outward at least 12".
I have a door that closes on the coop that I shut at night.
My question is, do I really need to close the door? Nothing short of a bear (which we do not have around here) could get into the pen. We also do not have mountain lions, cougars or any large cats.
Thanks for your replies.
Cheers
~Dr.Doug
