Stuart, Have you found that the volunteers catch up and fruit as early as the started plants?  The ones by the cattle barn often beat my husband's store bought plants. Chickens love red, juicy, ripe tomatoes. Cathryn

 

Most of my tomatoes last year were volunteers from the dropped ones the
year before.
