Birds show signs of illness when they are seriously ill.  Please keep us posted on how they are doing.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] little chick fell from the perch

One of mine was lucky today... I just happened to notice a little pink toe peeking out from the feeder (one of the tall plastic hoppers with a tray around the bottom).  Thought it must be a mouse at first, but it was one of the chicks.  I guess she must have jumped up on top of it, flipped the top, and whoops, down inside.  she was not the least bit happy--especially to be picked up and wiggled out past the bail it hangs by!

[CHICKENS-101] Re: bumpy eggs with thin shells

Hi, thanks for the suggestions---they are exactly a year old this month, and no, I haven't supplemented them at all...I was planning to start up the ACV again. But isn't it odd that it's only one chicken's eggs? everyone elses are fine.
But I will try the oyster shell. and their own shells, which they do get, but not regularly. thank you!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] runny poop

One or two droppings or many, saturated floor?  A few I'd ignore it.  Many I'd add steam rolled oats or oatmeal, (dry uncooked), if you have a few.

What do I do for runny poop?  I went to feed my hens today and I noticed at the door a splat of runny poo.  What can I do for it, and what can cause it?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Treating Cocci with apple cider vinegar?

Gary, Of course, it's Maurphy';s Law.  I am so sorry and hope the cider helped. I've read that vitamin A helps chicks resist cocci, but don't know if poultry vitamins will help them until you can get a cocci med.

Hi Cathryn,

I know how deadly cocci is and I normally treat it with Sulmet, youre recommendation the first time I had trouble. The problem was that I didn't discover them being sick until I was heading out for work and I was all out of sulmet. I wasn't going to be home until after 5pm so I gave them the apple cider vinegar anyway knowing I would treat with Sulmet as soon as I could. I have treated them all with Sulmet. Only a handful of them look sick, but the Coop floor looked liked a slaughter house this morning when I looked in. It had several larger red bloody spots.

Of course my favorites are the ones that are sick.

Get a cocci med asap so you don't loose them. ACV will not kill the protozoa that causes cocci. Albon, Dimethox, Corrid, there are several other meds you can use too.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: little chick fell from the perch

That 's a good idea if the patch is stiff enough to be a splint and can be left on for long periods of time.  Usually they can't because of the adhesive and the contents that cause the chemical reaction to make heat.

Hi guys! haven't been around in a while, no news is good news!! All is well except for the last few weeks I've had one of my girls laying eggs that have a bumpy-gritty build up on the narrow end of the egg, and the shells are so thin that they are broken about 99% of the time when I go to collect. This is only one girl...any thoughts?? the bumps range from tiny round grains of sand-to larger barnacles.
thanks for any info!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: got a question

It was 90 here in Michigan and way too hot.  Had numerous fans in each barn running.  If I misted all of my bedding would be wet and it'd mold with the humidity.  Ugh!   Finally after years of trying to find someone to get my awnings up, I have a huge awning going up on the back of my main barn.  Have a smaller one on the baby barn by the main barn.

No, not warm, but they have a pain reliever in them. Works on me similar to
Advil, but "spot on" treatment rather than a pill. Anyway, the poor girl
was limping and sometimes that can have an affect on the good leg and I
tried it and thank goodness it worked.
