Mine aren’t that big but yes, when full grown, those legs and thighs! I can’t believe the color changes on the male! He goes from blue head to white head to bright red wattles and his snood seems to have grown several inches overnight! He is also more vocal and we have conversations. I love having the turkeys free ranging, too. They sometimes come as far as our front deck and one day I heard him “gobbling” right under my office window.
He doesn’t like the cats and will stalk them. If they stop and look at him, he looks the other way, as if to say. “ la di da da……….la did a” but when they turn and start to walk away, he rushes and pecks them! A very funny sight!

Laura, Don't their huge, strong feet, thick scaly toes and legs remind you of a dinosaur's feet and legs? It was amazing how big and strong their bones and feet were on my turkeys.

I am the one with a tom that I threaten to send to freezer camp if he is naughty. So far, he just puffs up and watches us when we come near his “women”. We have had toms in the past that have become very aggressive and unlike roosters, they can knock you down when they jump on you from behind. My tom is a Narragansett x and I have been told this breed is fairly docile. Royal Palms are supposed to be docile, also. My past toms were Bourbon Reds and like I said, too aggressive. They would stay a good distance away if we carried a rake or stick in our hand, but when we turned our backs on them, they would rush to us and jump on us. Even went after the dog who was minding her own business!
I love my hens and yes, their eggs are awesome! We use our turkey eggs for everything from cooking, baking, frying, boiling, etc. They make awesome devilled eggs and prompt some hysterical looks from people who have never seen turkey eggs. I particularly enjoy serving devilled eggs made from bantams, standards and turkeys…………small, medium and large. It is a hoot to see their reactions!
IF my current tom becomes aggressive, we will keep him in a pen to keep visitors safe…….I don’t want him enrolled in freezer camp because I want fertile eggs next Spring to hatch poults!
