Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: HOw many chickens in a 10x10 coop??

Hi Prof. Chicken Dave, But, if you live in an area where winter coops your chickens up in a coop, I'd go with half that number.  Otherwise they get cranky and pick on each other.  Chickens need room when locked indoors.
Yesterday I watched 5 silkie roosters who usually get along with all the silkies fine, gang up, together, on another rooster and almost kill him.  The attack was vicious.   I am wondering if it is the bigger chicks getting on their nerves or if they just know better than to behave like that when I am around.  I broke them up yelling no, no at them, and gave them each a slap to stop it.  They put one of this gentle rooster's eyes out.  They all grew up together and have always gotten along.  They have plenty of space and hens, feed dishes scattered all over their pen, and a huge outdoor pen.  I will be watching more carefully.

Extensive Research at TimeWarrior Farm Rare Breed Conservation Reserve indicates best all around compromise is 4 sq. ft. (0.37 sq.m.) /bird = 25 birds in 100 sq. ft. (9.29 sq.m.) provided they have free access to range and the coop house is used for roosting, laying, keeping feed dry and water easily available.

Perches should provide a minimum of 6 lineal inches (15 cm)/bird and provision should be made for different sub-flocks to have separate perches with vertical and horizontal separation of at least 6 inches (15 cm)
