Actually, the new adoptive people knew fairly early on that Chuck Hogue wanted his dog back. The Humane society kept their names confidential for quite a while. The paper was FULL of letters to the editor of people demanding the folks give Annie back. It totally took on a life of it's own and this whole town was talking about it. Finally someone "slipped" and released the name of the people and boy did things get ugly then. THEN the people gave the dog back. Only when it became personal did they respond. Up until then, they remained nameless and made no effort to give Annie back. Surely they read the blogs and the newspapers of people BEGGING them to give that old man back his dog he had had for the last 7 years. Boy if I had adopted a pet and then found out the real owners were desperately trying to find it, OMG, I'd give it back immediately. Most people here don't feel sorry for the new family...they didn't "do the right thing" until they were literally FORCED to. Several local commentators and radio hosts are encouraging people to get on with their lives and let this go since I guess there were SOME people who might have gotten dangerous over it. People can be pretty awful when they don't have anything positive to do with their lives.....

Britt, I think it is heart breaking for the adoptive family too. They carefully pick out their pet and pay all the fees. For 30 days they have trained, bought treats, vet check, food, toys, beds, et... and bonded with their dog. Then they are expected to hand it over without feeling a sense of loss and leaving a hole in their life. It's a no win situation for them. I understand the family wanting their dog back, and the shelter was wrong. Cathryn
