Susan, They can't get thru heavy duty woven fencing with hog ringed galvanized poultry fencing over it. The gap between the silkie pen and the pheasant pen between the barn and gate is too small for the pheasants to fly up and go thru. If they did, they would be in the silkie pen and end up in the main barn. I am not missing a silkie in the partrdige pen. I went thru each one by color and name. But 12 pheasants are missing in the pen that shares a fence wall that a predator could get thru to the partridge pen.
There was one place where we found the fence rusted under the mulberry tree and a small hole in the 8ft high roof of the pen. But the pheasants couldn't go thru it, and nothing could climb back out because it would have to carry a dozen pheasants up the fence, then across the top, then out and not leave any feathers or hair. Full grown jumbo pheasants are nice sized birds and mine were on the fat side. My husband promised to get the entire top replaced this week and to get the tree cut down. I girdled the tree a month ago when I noticed that the top was starting to rust. I have to go and replace a yellow 60 watt bulb for the chicks so they can find their food in the night and give them a bit of heat along with their silkie parents they are slowly out growing. Where 5-8 chicks could get under and up against a hen, now only a couple can. Thankfully the roosters are pitching in too.
First day of school tomorrow with students... Cathryn

It is amazing to me how things can disappear and how things can get through small seemingly secure spaces and leave a disaster behind. Our chickens are worth protecting though so we will go to the trouble. S

Susan, The pen has a fence top that is what is so baffling. :( Cathryn
Oh my gosh, I am so sad for you ! I know you are heartbroken. Sounds like a hawk or owl got them. We also have to enclose every little thing and put them in the house at night. BTW, my silkies and top hats are happy and healthy. Thanks again. I love to watch them play. Susan
