Re: [CHICKENS-101] Mama hen feed & resuming laying

Beth, you aren't eating any eggs from hens on the chick starter, right?  Just wanted to make sure.  : )

Am currently feeding Starter chick feed to the chicks & morning & evening tossing in some scratch & sunflower oil seeds for the moms, along with their grit.  Should they be getting a different feed?  When should I resume feeding them their layena?

Which brings me to the next question:  how soon after hatching will they resume laying?  I had a Jersey Giant that had gotten off her nest enough times that nothing hatched out after day 21.  Checked the eggs & there would have been 3 nice chicks, but they were dead.

Tonight I had a fart egg in the nest box.  When they resume laying, will the eggs be smaller like that?  Or perhaps I just had a chicken that couldn't quite get it right :)  They are all around a year old.
