Dear Marla,
I just re read what you had written.
You wrote:
I raise buff orps and mine layed thru winter with just a slight decrease in number of eggs until they got to be around 3 or 4 years. They are my fave dual purpose chicken.
A. Do you find a way to keep egg production up past two years (since most people I know either sell or butcher after two years). OR is the Buff Orp more likely to have a longer lasting egg production up into 3 and 4 years whereas other chickens such as the Red Star peak out sooner and drop off after two years? (Or could I find a way to keep my Red Stars in production by feeding them very well and singing to them?) Ha ha! Maybe they'd stop laying SOONER if I sung to them…..
But my overall question is, do Buff Orps keep their egg production up longer in terms of years than other breeds of chickens?
Thanks!
