Re: [CHICKENS-101] New Subject: Silkie sitting on fertilized eggs

Sheli, I would have given your silkie all 5 eggs because shipped eggs often have problems hatching. I wonder if sometimes our shipping eggs were played foot ball with before they arrive, because perfectly good fertile eggs will not grow or hatch after being shipped. What you experienced is a normal problem for shipped eggs. Have you ever considered polish? Naked neck silkies? Silkies? My friend Dave Schwartz sells hatching eggs in the spring and his polish are gorgeous with very nice crests and silver lacing, I get my NN silkies from him, and we both have silkies from each other. Or pick a breeder that is closer to you to buy eggs from. If you posted here in the spring you might find someone closer to you. Start looking ahead of when you want them so when your silkie goes broody you can either put eggs or chicks under her.

I bought them from a farm that sells Maran eggs online. She said she shipped them as soon as they had been laid. I'll make sure I wash any eggs I get next time, before I put them under her.

Do you get better hatches from incubating them or from letting your Silkies sit on them? Most people want to sell 6-12eggs for better hatching prospects I guess. I don't have an incubator, and if I put too many under her, I think they won't get properly heated. So, I only wanted to purchase 3 for her. The lady sent 5 so I started her with 5, but removed 2 shortly, because she couldn't cover all of them.

I'd like to get another Silkie to be an adoptive mom and plus, I just love how sweet they are. My little Zoe is a character. I just haven't been able to get any more from my feed store lately.

Maybe I'll try getting an incubator too, but I would have to buy them online, because I don't know anyone locally that I can buy from.

I'll have to read up on mycoplasmas, thanks for mentioning that.
