Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: IN NEED OF DESPARATE HELP!

Lori, You are awesome!  I have used a sponge with holes cut for the same use, but I like the chair idea that you used. It's really, really rare for a chick to recover. His tendon must have been badly bruised but not torn for him to recover. He wouldn't have recovered at all with out everything you did for him. You have every right to be proud of your chick. Can't wait to hear more about Jack aka Cracker-Jack.

Cathryn,

Honestly, I was ready to give up on the little guy. Broke my heart to see him on his belly, dragging his right foot behind him. I was ready to cull him and I'm not one to think in this term.. THANK GOD I thought twice. LOL He just looked so helpless and if anything my thought was he would probably drown.

So I read Vitamin B complete cures most leg issues, well LETS SEE. So I put a tablet in his water and let it melt away, I gave him two drops of Polyvisol per day, he was NOT a huge fan of the Polyvisol and all the vitamin B complete water he wanted.

I made a chair, the chair is of a Sock and a bottom of a Ceramic potpouri dish. I use just the bottom part where you would normally put the candle.

Covered it completely with the sock, put TWO holes in the sock for his little feet to go into, so he's kind of in a hammick, his feet can touch the bottom of the potpouri dish is what I wanted to help him get some strength in his little legs.

Well his one good leg was strong enough for him to push himself totally out of the chair, which is OK because he still forced to use the bad leg. It did take him over 24 hours to master the escape. LOL.. SO for the first 24 hours he was stuck in the chair, not a happy camper... LOL

After I made the chair now I had to come up with something so that he can eat and drink, so I got TWO cups just about the same size as the potpouri dish, took two pickle jar lids, small sizes, and placed them on top of the cups, the cups were upside down. Put them as close to him as I could because I was going to be gone all day at work so there was no way I could watch over him. They were close enough to him that he could eat and drink just fine.. He's only a couple of days old so he didn't need a whole lot of water or a whole lot of food.. I did grind up the food for him as well so he has little pieces to eat..

Honestly, when I got home last night I was exspecting to see him dead, but what a SURPRISE to see that he has escaped from his chair and was walking around. WOW. He's still a little wobbly but is gain control each hour. I put him back in the chair when I got home and within an hour, he was out of that chair. LOL. So instead of fighting with him, I let him go. No more chair for him.. Now he will be forced to use that leg all day..

This is definitely not your Ordinary Chick, all the years I have hatched and raised chickens, I know that baby chicks HATE to be alone. NOT THIS GUY, he rather be alone all the time. I tried putting two friends with him, OH NOOOO, he pecked at them as of to say THIS IS MY TURF.. So he lives alone with his LOL, LOL LOL THREE LEGGED STUFFED BUNNY. OMG, I just realized I put that in there with him. OMG..... Little guy with a leg issue hanging out with my three legged stuffed bunny. OMG.... No wonder he likes to be alone, he has something in commen with the stuffed bunny.

Because his shell was cracked all over when I dropped him I decided to call him Jack. Why Jack well - Cracker Jack..of course. LOL...

That's my chick story... Thanks for listening. Will keep you posted..
