If your hens came from such a horrid place it may also take a while longer to get them healthy before they have "excess" to put into weight gain. You might think about a symptomatic coccidiosis. Their systems had to have been in bad shape possibly stunted or permanently damaged. I learned the hard way about buying bucket calves from bad conditions. I now have year old calves that are no where near butcher size/weight and never will be. Their systems can't handle grain or they get scours. They eat grass and hay only and do fine. You may find similar stomach problems with your hens. Unclean conditions when young can set up a whole host of problems for life. I hope you are lucky and can get them straightened up quickly.
