Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: HOw many chickens in a 10x10 coop??

Sue, I have a guinea who thinks she is a silkie, tries to sound like a silkie,  stays in her big chick silkie pen, and even hides under Blue Boy silkie when I catch a few to look over.  I think she'd like me to glue gray silkie down all over her so her down matches her feathers.
She should grow up to be ok with chickens because she has never seen another guinea, only silkies.  I think she is going to go live with silkies from her pen to Bobbye.  At least for her nothing is changing as far as her friends and she should stay gentle.
My other guineas that were raised with silkies were too rough when they ran around like their heads were cut off. They out sized the silkies by three and four times and you could hear the hens Oomph when the guineas landed on them.  Then proceeded  flip their silkie mom's over as they buried their heads under their silkie moms, scrambling and clawing to get under them.  The guineas had to go into their own coop and barn.  When they wouldn't share the meat bird pen with the turkeys I put the guineas in a rabbit hutch until another pen with a huge dog house was built. It's never ending isn't it? LOL!

I agree. Winter lock up is bad enough without overcrowding them :(

As you know Cathryn, even in my BIG chickenhouse, I had to give `Ollie The Toe' (guinea boss) and his partners in crime their own digs for winter, the chickens were threatening a strike if I didn't. NO eggs until the guineas were GONE.

Every fall the guineas would huddle together giggling and scheming with their plans for winter lock up. The chickens would look at me wild eyed, 'You're NOT planning on leaving them in HERE with US?!'

5-6 months locked up with guineas that are not on a Valium drip is an exercise in mayhem; not to mention, dust and feathers flying that would exceed the dust bowl of the 30s in Texas and Oklahoma combined.

Hence, the chickens have regained exclusive `chickenhouse' status in the winter; if you're not a card carrying member, you won't be allowed access.

I'm expecting the guineas to hire an attorney claiming that their civil rights are being denied.
