I am not sure exactly who certifies or if the definition of organic is mandated by county, state or nation…….I did learn a few things about it. To advertise free ranged organic eggs, I had to be able to certify the ground they free range on has not had ANY chemical/pesticide supplement for FIVE years. We haven’t even owned for five years, so there goes that certification. If fed grains, they must be certified organic, also. Well, in checking the price of organinc grains, I decided it was going to cost more than I could recoup, so we do not advertise ours as organic, although we do advertise no cages and free ranged.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Organic?
I'm pretty new to chickens. Got my 14 this past March and they've just started laying (yay!) My question is, if I wanted to sell the surplus as "organic" what do I need to do to make that claim? I've heard the term "certified" organic, so I'm assuming someone needs to certify that I'm feeding the correct feed. Can anyone point me in the right direction to look into this?
Thanks,
Anne
