RE: [CHICKENS-101] dry brittle feathers

> I have a buff orpenter with dry brittle feathers that break when i pick
her up is this diet related????? She is also turning some white color on
certain feathers. she is only one year and a half.

probably starting to molt, the color usually gets lighter and they start
looking like crap, you can feed them a bit more protein to give some
nutritional support when they are going through a molt. Don't be alarmed
when you find a lot of feathers all over the place and when she stops
laying eggs. I give mine Diamond Naturals either the chicken and rice or
the beef and rice dog food to increase their protein intake and add some
other grains instead of the corn and soy. I soak it with water, in the
summer I give it just before they go to bed so they have their crop full of
food with lots of water to get them through the nights when it is hot. In
the winter I give it to them warm in the mornings.

[CHICKENS-101] Chic RoadKill [1 Attachment]

Here's Roadkill (S)he's a Naked Neck (Yeah, I'm intelligent, when I
first posted a picture of Roadkill, I thought people were picking on me
by calling it "Naked Neck"). I was looking for Taffy Duct but she looks
like my Leghorns.

RE: [CHICKENS-101] Position of nesting boxes in a coop

One reason is to have an access door to the nest boxes and that is achieved easily if they are protruding.  The roof of the nest boxes can be hinged, whereas that would be much more difficult were they not protruding. Another is to leave as much sf available in the coop for the chickens.

Is there a good reason to have nesting boxes protruding from a coop?

But on the first picture of the chic ' roadkill' snuggled down did any of you spot the 'optical' illusion that the roadkill had a huge pointed beak!
I had to take a second glance to distinguish the real beak from the 'shadow' beak lol. What a cool picture. Jane & Co.

[CHICKENS-101] (unknown)

Ray, what a great post! And I could not agree with you more. Those old forgotten laws can and will be used against you if someone has an axe to grind.

It has long been my opinion that city people are WAY out of touch with reality. I'm sure lots of you have seen that email that floats around every hunting season that shows an add in a news paper that says, "Shame on you hunters for killing the poor little animals, you should get your meat at the grocery store where no animals are harmed."

Now, if we could just get everybody to grow a back bone and stop going along to get along, and stand up to some of this garbage, mabe we could make a difference. A good start if your in Missouri is to VOTE NO on Prop. B :-)
