Re: [CHICKENS-101] HEN killed my new young guinea

I'm so sorry for those who have lost babies.

We lost a baby White Leghorn yesterday afternoon. We had moved them
outside to the temporary cage and we never thought one of the cats could
get to a chick but Mini Jet got on top of the cage and snagged a baby.
We tried to rescue it from the cat but weren't successful. Needless to
say the top of the cage is completely covered and the cover is weighted
down by old carbide wheels (which are pretty darned heavy). When I
catch Mini Jet, he's going to the pound without a second thought. He
won't eat another one of our chicks and live to brag.

We're so sad. :-(

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Introducing chickens to a new coop

If you're letting them range the yard; the first couple evenings after you let them out; toss feed around their coop & just outside of it to draw them to the coop around bedtime.

I put them in the coop (they are our first chickens) last night where they have been. It's a decent size coop for 2 birds..5 1/2' x 4' and they can peck etc. I went out this morning to let them out but then thought I had better come back in and research some more. If I let them out are they likely to make their way back to the coop this evening? We're in an urban back yard so they don't have far to go but I can picture them nesting under the travel trailer.

Ohh, I mainly want to let others know so not to make the same mistake I made.
And, yes my silkies are in another coop and never mixed. They are just too delicate - it seems.

I'm very sorry to hear! I do not have guineas, but have been scared to even mix my silkies with rest of my flock even while I move and clean the silkie coop..... I cannot imagine your loss!

[CHICKENS-101] New beaks and bills on the block

Finally after a year of wanting . . . I have 3 Runner ducklings! They are chocolate. 4 days old now. DH went to get feed and they were in, tho not supposed to be there until Friday. So I had to do some shuffling today to get them into a larger brooder. They're loving that.  Silkies are out in their own house now.
Just too darn cute! I've never had ducks before so this is all new to me.
I called the pet/feed store where we got them today, at DH's request and he brought me home 3 Delaware chicks. Pullets. He was wanting them since we live in DE. Other than one has a wonky toe, they are cute lil balls of fluff. The wonky one's "last" front toe sometimes goes normal other times looks like there is no gap, but it's getting around just fine.
Ok. This might not seem like a biggie to some. But DH is suffering from a bad head cold, been working all day outside and then left work to drive 45 mins one way to do this over the last 2 days. Gotta love him!

[CHICKENS-101] Re: free range eggs/ Mike

Uh-oh, I'm in trouble now - grammer has never been a strong point. I'm liking the ability to 'free range' as an older adult. Something to look forward to...(oh no, I don't know how to end this sentence...).

Anyhow, I don't think accidental clay pigeon (subliminal: hawk) shooting is appropriate activity after heart surgery. Give it 4 weeks at least Cathryn!

[CHICKENS-101] Re:

The handling may be a problem. I don't see why a live animal would have to sit on a runway in a cold snap. They should be inside--it's a living being.

But that's my opinion, and worth all it costs.

Personally, I'm seeing a problem with the handling once the chick is "packed."

hi debbie,

i have zero experience shipping chicks but i have shipped dogs (long stories because i don't breed dogs and i won't ship rescues), and what i've found is that if you call local information and for example, ask for the local number for ups, fed ex or continental at atlanta, you get a real person in atlanta and the thankfully few times i have had to do that an incredibly nice person has worked very hard to help get the dog thru without any trauma.
i would hope they would do the same thing for chicks at risk.

I am so sorry, Debbie, and hope you are able to catch and kill the predator.  Going now to bait my cat trap!

Its my turn.  In a previous message today, I told about my babies.  I got home to find 4of my 14 babies dead.  One or two were missing their heads.  No other chickens harmed and being the same size as my 2 banty hens, I thought they would have been safe.  I was wrong.  My 2 Faverolles, a  Delaware and a Turken dead.
