Re: [CHICKENS-101] new flock

Rhonda, It is way easier to in-grain in their heads for 3 weeks where to lay, roost, eat, and drink, than to undo bad habits. Way easier.  I have found that the average time is 3 weeks which ticks off my older hens.  It takes about 3 weeks to re establish their pecking order, redo who is laying where, and for a flock to bond with new pullets when new pullets are added.
I loved your egg stories about your girls laying in the tack room, getting locked in and barely surviving the heat, and the other funny antics they played on you.  Though I have to admit I am glad it was you going thru it not me! LOL!

I want to second Cathryn's comment about keeping the young ladies confined (either to the coop itself or to a small yard with the coop) until they bond with their nesting boxes--I should have thought of it myself! I let my first flock roam free from the start, and had quite a time with hidden eggs... All over the loft, in a horse stall, behind stored items, on a hay wagon (and beside its wheels), in the roots of an uprooted tree... I know there were others. I'd hear cackling and run to see where one was coming from this time. Got pretty good at it, and it could be fun having Easter every day, but it *did* take a bit of extra time. Current flock was confined to an electric-net yard around the mobile coop while they were learning to lay, so other than a few eggs hidden in the weeds, they have been quite good about using the nest boxes.

Of course there's one of the original flock who's decided that the perfect spot is next to the bale of hay just opened for the horses in the barn...
