Aaaaw! I had a barred rock hen who crowed as good as the roosters. She was so awesome. She started this when we got a rooster she really didn't like. One morning the rooster mounted her, she screamed and died..... She really didn't like him.

Good morning everyone. This morning around 6:30 I opened my back kitchen door to let in the cats and I heard crowing coming from the direction of the ladies's coop.

We have all old maid hens,no roosters. Most of our girls are over 4 years old with the exception of 3 that my niece gave us last year as 1 week old chicks.

From the 10 hens,8 are buff orpingtons, 2 are barr-rocks. We average 3-7 eggs a day,and I have never heard any of them crow. Cackle,braaawk, and other hen talk but no crows. At least not until this morning.

A nice deep crow sounded form the coop! I went out with their feed and opened their door, but there were nothing but the ladies cackling good morning at me as they raced outside to their breakfast.

So now we have a mystery. The nearest farm to us is about a mile away,and they do have roosters,but I don't think my girls invited any of them over for a hen party!
