Sex links are a hybrid. They can breed but it isn't advised. The reason they advise against it is they "don't breed true". You don't know what you'll get. They are essentially a mutt.
I have hatched chicks out of sex links. They all sooner or later ended up in the freezer. Not saying they are bad. I used a RIR (rhode island red) rooster and realized when they were chicks that RIR and their crosses just weren't for me. My DH has a habit of liking animals that I deem psychotic and get rid of. He doesn't take care of them he just thinks they're pretty. Whether it's a well bred beautiful male goat that tries to flatten me every time I entered the pen or murderous cannibalistic chickens, he sees the beauty and I deal with reality. Lol
Sorry I got a bit off topic.
If you're wanting meat and egg chickens I would advise picking out what color of cornish appeals to you most getting a rooster and then getting hens of a medium to large egg laying breed. You could then cross them and get at least moderately good meat chickens. Cornish roos are calmer than most large roos and so should be safer around your son.

While I'm waiting for the library books I need answers. My feed store has "Production RI Reds? and "Black set links" some cross breed brown egg layer. When I called they said these are hybrids.
When reading the McMurray catalog (it's since disappeared into the Black Hole) there was a note about their hybrids that they shouldn't be bred or maybe couldn't be bred, I don't recall.
The thing of it is, I want meat as well as eggs. If I were to buy the hybrid and had a rooster would I get meat chickens or just an ornery rooster. I don't need a 2nd free-loading chicken.
Thanks and confused,
Allen
