I guess, that was part of my question: does using a marker or a pencil make a difference. I guess I was wondering about the lead from a pencil having any adverse effect.

to be politically correct use a pencil (funny) but serious people that store eggs for hatching use the pencil .
It is said that the marker will (if only marginal) effect the egg .
I don't know all this beyond a shadow of doubt but i do use a pencil ..... if i can't find one i (no i'm not going to use a marker)look some more .
