Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: How do you deal with really hot weather?

Nancy, I put chunks of ice in my chicken's water and freeze water in containers for them to stand on.  I also serve cold/refrigerated:  water melon, summer squash, zucchini, green beans, purslane, ET...  It helps your chickens deal with summer heat to add a bit of vitamin C and poultry vitamins with minerals to their water.

I had a fan in the barn on the smaller chicks and a pan of water for them to play in that they loved! I had a couple of trays of water in with the bigger Ladies, and added some ice cubes every couple of hours. But they really didn't care about playing in it, they were more curious about what I was doing, and then just playing with the ice cubes!
Our weather has modified the last 2 days and we are back to more 'normal' temps for the time being. But I am gathering lots of fun and useful information for the next time we get a hot spell.
When we first decided to get chickens, Hubby and I were completely wrapped in making sure we could keep them warm in the winter, it never occurred to us to be worried about keeping them cool in the summer! We are learning as we go! We must be doing something right because all of our Girls are still alive!
