I spoke to my avian vet about avocado. It seems that not all avocados have the poison, or sometimes you can get away with it. He said to avoid it.
One other comment about poisons and birds: Non-stick pans are deadly to birds if they get too hot. It's a really horrid death, too. Lots of people have birds and baby chicks in their houses, so it is something to worry about. It's probably not good for people, either, especially babies. Teflon kills a lot of pet birds.
