<<So we have had a few rats invade our property and have baited and caught them and gotten rid of them, but what are some tips I should be aware of to not attract any back?
The feed is hanging from the coop roof and no other foods are available, so I am curious why they are coming around?>>
Could be something growing in the vicinity that they like--or something a neighbor has. If it were more toward autumn, I'd guess they were looking for shelter for the winter.
I hope when you say you "got rid" of them, that you killed them rather than releasing them elsewhere. Someone did that here some years ago--we had a terrible time, the rats even gnawed the horses' hooves until they bled. We went through dozens of boxes of D-Con (fortunately we didn't have the chickens then) as well as snap-trapping many more (ditto).
