My two Buff Orpington hens got off their nests about every two days, ran out into the pen, ate, drank, pooped, ate some more, drank some more and went back to setting. I was worried, but they seem to know what they were doing.
My Silkie hens went into trance mode, too. But they also got up every once in a while and did their thing. I did put a plate of feed and a waterer near them in the coop and they would reach over and eat some while I watched. One would peck lightly at my hand if I disturbed her, but the other just basically ignored me.
