Re: [CHICKENS-101] Newspaper, straw or chips

<<What are your opinions about using shredded newspaper as bedding and flooring?>>

I use some, more with the horses than for the chickens, though.  It blows out (or gets kicked out) of my coop, which is open for the chickens to free range, while the one stall I use it in is indoors, hence it stays put.  I used to shred it by hand, now I put it through the leaf shredder--it needs to be small, like shavings, or it wads up.

The major objection is that it can look like trash.  It certainly did when the chickens scratched at it and kicked it out of the coop!  I mostly use it with just one horse, who can be relied on to pee in one spot and who works well with the deep-litter method--so when it finally goes on the manure pile, it's well-soaked and packed with other bedding, and doesn't blow around.
