Would this have been anywhere near Haye-on-Wye? A dear friend of mine (now in rural New York) lived lived there for many years. A more solid, un-prone-to-hysteria person you'd never meet--but she swears she saw a black panther one dusk, and that her stock (horses and cattle) were running and snorting like they'd been badly spooked as well.
