>Sheli, I would have given your silkie all 5 eggs because shipped eggs often have problems hatching. I wonder if sometimes our shipping eggs were played foot ball with before they arrive, because perfectly good fertile eggs will not grow or hatch after being shipped. What you experienced is a normal problem for shipped eggs. Have you ever considered polish? Naked neck silkies? Silkies? My friend Dave Schwartz sells hatching eggs in the spring and his polish are gorgeous with very nice crests and silver lacing, I get my NN silkies from him, and we both have silkies from each other. Or pick a breeder that is closer to you to buy eggs from. If you posted here in the spring you might find someone closer to you. Start looking ahead of when you want them so when your silkie goes broody you can either put eggs or chicks under her.
I have never heard of Naked Neck Silkies, so I went to take a look. How funny. Just makes me want to knit a little scarf for them! I can just picture a little white silkie with a bright red scarf. Maybe our resident chicken artist can draw one up!
Yes, one of the reasons I want another silkie is to help raise my day old chicks. They are such good mothers! The polish are beautiful. I'd like to get some of those, too. I will start looking ahead and planning that. She's pretty regular about going broody quite often.
