I use untreated wood shavings from a local cabinet shop (so I say pine shavings). They are easier to clean up if they get wet from waterers then hay is. Hay or straw gets heavy fast. Chickens like to scratch and keep the shavings turned nicely.
Well that's jmo but they're also already used to the shavings.
Best of luck and if you haven't posted before, Welcome!

I am a newbie to raising chickens. My husband almost has the chicken coop built, and I was wanting opinions on as to what to put on the floor of the chicken coop? The coop has a plywood bottom to keep out predators. Should I use pine shavings, hay? Something else? I have been putting shredded paper covered by pine shavings in the box for the chicks, but the time has come to move them to the coop.
Thanks so much, in advance, for all the help.
